Construction Update – Nov. 18, 2010

This update will be the last (yippee!) of monthly construction updates. On behalf of Washington County, its design engineer David Evans and Associates, and the contractor, Northwest Earthmovers Inc., we would like to thank you for your understanding and patience during the construction.

Current Activities

  • Continue with backfilling and grading behind new sidewalks
  • Continue with the installation of landscaping, working south, from Bauer Woods Dr. to Cornell Road
  • Continue with relocation and installation of mailboxes and support posts
  • Complete installation of new traffic signs and support posts
  • Installation of miscellaneous roadway striping and markers throughout project
  • Installation on roadway monumentation (valve) boxes throughout project

Upcoming Activities (2 weeks out)

No other activities are scheduled. Contractor will continue with the installation of landscaping and begin working on small “punchlist” items to complete the project by the end of the calendar year.

SPECIAL NOTE: The project area is still posted as a construction zone with a reduced speed limit of 25 mph between Cornell Road and the south approach of Bauer Woods Drive.

This lower speed limit will stay in effect until after the completion of the landscaping for safety reasons. When this work is completed, the speed zone will change to the pre-construction speed limit (35 mph).

Construction Updates – Oct. 21, 2010

Current Activities

  • Installation of roadway striping, legends and markers between Barnes Road and Filbert Street (including installation of crosswalks at all signalized intersections: 128th Terrace, Dogwood, and Cornell Road)
  • Energize (turn on) of new traffic signals at 128th Terrace and Dogwood Street
  • Continue with installation of railings at Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library)
  • Backfilling and compactions of parking lot area behind Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library)
  • Continue with soil preparation and installation of landscaping (trees) north of 128th Terrace
  • Begin construction of relocated bike access off of Saltzman Court (this access is in place of the 131st access that will be closed off)
  • Energize (turn on) of all new roadway lighting along project corridor

Upcoming Activities (2 weeks out)

  • Restoration of asphalt pavement behind Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library)
  • Complete installation of railings at Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library)
  • Continue with construction of relocated bike access off of Saltzman Court
  • Continue installation of landscaping
  • Installation of mailboxes and supports

REMINDER: The project area has been designated a construction zone and the posted speed limit has been temporarily reduce to 25 mph between Cornell Road and the south approach of Bauer Woods Drive (this includes the recently paved portion of the roadway). All existing traffic restrictions remain in place, including left turn restrictions and school speed zone.

Special Construction Update, Sept. 30, 2010

Final road reconstruction is planned beginning on Monday, October 4th. Northwest Earthmovers Inc. (NEI), and their subcontractors, will begin road reconstruction work on the final segment of Saltzman Road, from just north of Barnes Road to Filbert Street with the goal to have the road within this segment substantially completed by mid-October.

The following is the tentative schedule for the resurfacing work, weather dependent:

Monday, October 4th and Tuesday, October 5th:

  • Milling of existing asphalt surface. (Note that this is not the pulverization of the asphalt as was done previously – the milling will only be deep enough for the installation of a final paving lift)

Wednesday, October 6th (day and night work):

  • Base paving of widened sections adjacent to the Milltown Shopping Center (Walgreens) and Library
  • Final lift paving between Barnes Road and Filbert Street

Thursday, October 7th

  • Installation of temporary striping

Other construction activities for the week include:

  • Continue with the installation of miscellaneous curb, gutter, and sidewalks
  • Continue with the installation of landscaping north of 128th Terrace
  • Installation of railing for Retaining Walls No. 1 and No. 2

Current Activities

  • Complete installation of sidewalks along Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library) and at miscellaneous locations throughout project corridor.
  • Installation of railings at Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library).
  • Backfilling and parking lot pavement restoration behind Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library).
  • Begin soil preparation for installation of landscaping
  • Complete installation of new roadway lighting along east side of road from Cornell to Kearney Street.

Upcoming Activities (2 weeks out)

  • Complete road widening along Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center) and Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library).
  • Pulverization of existing pavement and finish grading of Saltzman Road between Barnes Road (south of Cornell) and Filbert Street.
  • Paving of Saltzman Road between Barnes Road (south of Cornell) and Filbert Street (this work is tentatively scheduled to be completed at night, the week of 27-Sept, weather dependent).
  • Installation of permanent pavement striping and legends on Saltzman Road between Barnes Road (south of Cornell) and Filbert Street.
  • Continue installation of landscaping

NOTE: The installation of the new signals at 128th Terrace/Saltzman and at Dogwood Street/Saltzman are complete but will not be operational until all final pavement striping has been installed, including crosswalks.

Construction Updates – Aug. 11 2010

Beginning tomorrow, August 12, the contractor, Northwest Earthmovers Inc., and their subcontractors, will begin road reconstruction work on existing Saltzman Road, between 128th Terrace and Filbert Street with the goal to have the road within this segment substantially completed prior to the Labor Day weekend.

The following is the tentative schedule for the resurfacing work, weather dependent:

August 12 and 13:

  • Pulverizing (grinding) of existing asphalt surface and rough grading

The week of August 16:

  • Fine grading of base rock
  • Adjustment of underground structures (manholes, valves) to final grades
  • Miscellaneous construction activities

The week of August 23:

  • Base lift and final lift paving
  • Installation of temporary striping
  • Installation of remaining illumination

NOTE: Because there will be several days between the initial pulverization of the existing roadway and the installation of the first lift of asphalt, traffic will need to be run on the base rock. Measures will be in place to minimize dust and to caution drivers in this section of the roadway.

As with most construction activities, there will be noise, dust, and traffic impacts. The County apologizes in advance for these inconveniences and appreciate your understanding and patience.

  • Continue with construction of Retaining Wall No. 1 (Milltown Shopping Center – Walgreens/Ace Hardware)
  • Grading and installation of new curb, gutter, and sidewalk along east side of Saltzman, between 128th Terrace and the north side of St Pius X
  • Complete installation of new driveways along west side of Saltzman Road between Lovejoy Street and Dogwood Street
  • Complete installation of new chain link fencing along back of walks and walls (all locations)
  • Complete testing of new 8” and 24” water lines and make final connections to existing side streets
  • Complete relocation of all overhead and underground utilities
  • Complete installation of all new underground utilities

Saltzman Road Construction Update, June 17, 2010

Current Activities

  • Continue with construction of Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library).
  • Begin grading and installation of new sidewalk along west side of Saltzman, between 128th Terrace and Lovejoy.
  • Begin installation of curb and gutters along east side of Saltzman, between 128th Terrace and Kearney.
  • Complete testing of new 8” and 24” water lines and make final connections to existing mains.
  • Complete installation of new traffic signal pole, arm, and signal heads at Cornell intersection (work to be performed at night).
  • Continue installation of new conduit wires, vault and transformer connections, and transfer of services over to the new facilities.  Transfer of services to the new facilities will be performed by specific utility provider or their designated contractor.
  • Continue with the relocation of overhead utility lines and transfer of services along east side of Saltzman Road, north of St. Pius X to Coleman Street (work to be performed by specific utility provider or their contractor).

Upcoming Activities (2 weeks out)

  • Continue with construction of Retaining Wall No. 2 (Library).
  • Begin excavation for Retaining Wall No. 1 footings (Walgreens/Ace Hardware)

Beginning the next week, the contractor, Northwest Earthmovers Inc., and their subcontractors, will begin reconstruction work on existing Saltzman Road, between 128th Terrace and Bauer Woods Drive in hopes to have the road substantially paved and completed prior to the Memorial Day weekend. The following is the tentative schedule for the resurfacing work, weather dependent:

May 3 thru 7

  • Pulverizing (grinding) of existing asphalt surface and rough grading
  • Raise utility structures to final pavement grade
  • Construction of median curb inlets

May 10 thru 14

  • Construction of median island curb between 128th and Burton
  • Final grading of base rock
  • Installation of base lift asphalt courses

May 17 thru 21

  • Final lift paving
  • Installation of temporary striping
  • Installation of illumination

NOTE: Because there will be several days between the initial pulverization of the existing roadway and the installation of the base lift asphalt, traffic will need to be run on the base rock. Measures will be in place to minimize dust and to caution drivers in this section of the roadway.
